In a joyous ceremony on Sunday, October 13th, 2024, at the 10:30 AM Mass, the Church of Saint Paul in Congers witnessed a significant milestone in the journey of seminarian Jay Maldonado. Most Reverend James Massa, Ph.D., D.D., Auxiliary Bishop and Rector of St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, instituted Maldonado as an acolyte.
The church was filled to capacity with parishioners who gathered to support and celebrate this important step in Maldonado's path to priesthood. Bishop Massa, in his address, recommended the seminarian to be at the service of both the local Church and his religious order, emphasizing the importance of this dual commitment. This event marks a particularly momentous occasion for the New York Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. Maldonado is only the second person to undergo the process of priestly formation within this community in New York, following in the footsteps of Steve Neier. The Oratory has previously welcomed other priests who joined after their ordination, making Maldonado's journey through formation within the community especially noteworthy. The institution of a seminarian as an acolyte is a significant step in priestly formation. This ministry involves assisting the deacon and priest in liturgical celebrations, especially in the celebration of Mass. It also includes, as needed, distributing Holy Communion as an extraordinary minister. This role reflects the individual's growing responsibilities in the liturgical life of the Church and their deepening commitment to service.
For the New York Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, this event represents continued growth and the fostering of new vocations within their community. As Maldonado continues his journey towards priesthood, the support of his parish community and the guidance of the New York Oratory will undoubtedly play crucial roles.
This celebration serves not only as a milestone for Maldonado but also as an inspiration to others considering a vocation to religious life. The Church of Saint Paul and the entire community look forward to supporting Maldonado in his continued formation and future ministry.
